Focus groups are the most common form of qualitative research. The number of people in each session can vary, but often 6-8 people are lead by a focus group moderator. There are other forms of focus group research, including online and telephone - and sometimes sessions are conducted with just you and the moderator.
On-Sites and Shop-Alongs
Shop-alongs are a fun type of qualitative research where you and the moderator (and his assistant) go shopping together. Sometimes, there's no moderator at all - just you, a question list, and a small video camera and you're off to shoot a small documentary!
Even people who aren't sure if they can do this are surprised to see how simple (and enjoyable) this type of research is.
There are times when researchers want t to watch you using products at home. In this case, the moderator and her assistant will come to your house and interview you there, or easy-to-use video cameras are sent to you so you can answer the questions on your own, when it's convenient for you.
